Daily Devotion

Have you ever had an experience with God that so deeply touched you that you were changed for a season? In those times many of us find ourselves reading the bible more, praying more and speaking to others about Jesus. We have the tendency to treat our fellow man with the utmost care and in the manner that God has admonished us to.  However, after these experiences this feeling usually wanes and is replaced by the cares of the world, and our first love gets swept away in a sea of work and life.

This happened to the church of Ephesus. God speaks to them in Revelations chapter 2:4-5 :  “But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love Me or each other as you did at first! Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. If you don’t repent, I will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches.”

Have you left your first love? Is God the passion that you pursue in the midst of all that your hand finds to do? We must always remember that He is the reason for all that we are.  If we have left our first love… God shows us here how to return. We must repent and begin to go back to the things we did at first: The times of prayer, and the Bible reading. Also, we must let our love life with God deepen. It is a daily process of being committed to Him. As we return to our first love He will return to us.

David, during his years of wandering before becoming king, sought to slay the House of Nabal because of an offence committed by Nabal against him. En-route, Nabal's wife Abigail intercepted David and interceded on Nabal's behalf. When David put it all into perspective, he said, "...blessed be the Lord.... (For He) hath kept his servant from evil." [38] David realized that his intentions were evil, and that God had stopped him through the intervention of Abigail. 

Most believers, during a time of introspection, realize that their experience parallels David's. There are times in their lives when God prevents them from executing their evil intentions. So important is this ministry of God that our Lord includes the request in the prayer He taught His disciples. The individual who does not see the necessity for such a prayer probably has not taken careful inventory of his own propensities and motives. 

This is one of the most important prayers in the arsenal of the believer, and something for which you should daily give God thanks. Looking back over my life I can see many occasions when my heart was intent on evil and God stopped me. It is one of the many expressions of His grace.

The axe-head seemed hopelessly lost, and as it was borrowed, the honour of the prophetic band was likely to be imperilled, and so the name of their God to be compromised. Contrary to all expectation, the iron was made to mount from the depth of the stream and to swim; for things impossible with man are possible with God.

I knew a man in Christ but a few years ago who was called to undertake a work far exceeding his strength. It appeared so difficult as to involve absurdity in the bare idea of attempting it. Yet he was called thereto, and his faith rose with the occasion; God honoured his faith, unlooked-for aid was sent, and the iron did swim. 

Another of the Lord’s family was in grievous financial straits, he was able to meet all claims, and much more if he could have realized a certain portion of his estate, but he was overtaken with a sudden pressure; he sought for friends in vain, but faith led him to the unfailing Helper, and lo, the trouble was averted, his footsteps were enlarged, and the iron did swim. 

A third had a sorrowful case of depravity to deal with. He had taught, reproved, warned, invited, and interceded, but all in vain. Old Adam was too strong for young Melancthon, the stubborn spirit would not relent. Then came an agony of prayer, and before long a blessed answer was sent from heaven. The hard heart was broken, the iron did swim.

Beloved reader, what is thy desperate case? What heavy matter hast thou in hand this evening? Bring it hither. The God of the prophets lives, and lives to help his saints. He will not suffer thee to lack any good thing. Believe thou in the Lord of hosts! Approach him pleading the name of Jesus, and the iron shall swim; thou too shalt see the finger of God working marvels for his people. According to thy faith be it unto thee, and yet again the iron shall swim.

"You Are What You Eat"

There are many staggering statistics today on one of our nation's biggest problems: Diabetes. Many of us know that the best preventative measure for diabetes is a lifestyle change. This usually includes diet and exercise. However, many in our nation will never choose to make that change.

It is challenging to eat things that are healthy and good for us. Most of the time, We will go for the pizza and the soda because it tastes better and we might feel happier than when we eat healthier. Ocassionly, we might justify these foods with, I am young and I can burn it off. We know the dangers, that the way we eat can do inward damage that is undetectable and may cause other problems later on. That usually prompts us not eat pizza everyday.

But, What about the spiritual? Is everything we allow into our mind and heart a good thing? Or are some things that we intake junk? Things that are junk infiltrate into our mind and may lead to outward or secret destruction.  There is a saying that says

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

 

In Phillipians 4:8, Paul gives us a great recipe for a healthy diet.  We should be ingesting things that are pure, lovely, and of good report. These, healthy items, exude a healthy spirit, and we should strive to make healthier spritual choices as well as physical ones. Though we may be physically healthy there is nothing worse than a spirit that is not. Our truest self is what we eat spiritually.

Prayer for Today: Ask God what your Spiritual diet is and where he can help make changes.

Press on

As medical students, we know what it means to press on. We have tests. We have night rounds. We are sometimes on call. There are many moments where our bodies want to quit, but our minds refuse to give in. Needless to say, we have a drive that’s in satiable and it is what helps us to perform.

Therin, lies the challenge.  We are usually so consumed by what we do we rarely take the opportunity to pour that drive into something else.  We need to learn to press on in other areas of our lives.  The apostle Paul said, “I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us..” We must in our lives ask God for the ability to press on for the prize God has waiting for us.

What is our prize? We must not forget that our life is not one that will be just here on the earth, but that we are citizens of heaven. One day we will be united with God. What a joyous day that will be! So in everything we do we must not forget the prize and the hope we have in Christ Jesus.  We must continue to press on to the prize.

"God our GPS"

Many of us have seen AllStates’ GPS system commercial.  ( If you have not , google the commercial). The GPS system states that it has never been updated so it just has to wing it. All of a sudden it recalculates and sends the driver into oncoming traffic. 

Unfortunately, this happens many times to us. We fail to update or even to follow our heavenly GPS system. God has a direction for our lives, but we respond to Him in different manners. Sometimes we throw away or hide His GPS.  Other times we fail to update the GPS by communing with God through prayer and Bible reading. Those moments where we wing it, sometimes end in disaster. And just like in the commercial we crash and burn.

God has a wonderful plan and direction for our lives. Sometimes it is never what others may expect, but God ultimately knows the best route. He will get us where we need to be if we just follow Him.

It is a true proverb, “Look for a thing where you dropped it, it is there.” So look for Christ where you lost him, for he has not gone away. But it is hard work to go back for Christ. Bunyan tells us, the pilgrim found the piece of the road back to the Arbour of Ease, where he lost his roll, the hardest he had ever travelled. Twenty miles onward is easier than to go one mile back for the lost evidence.

Take care, then, when you find your Master, to cling close to him. But how is it you have lost him? One would have thought you would never have parted with such a precious friend, whose presence is so sweet, whose words are so comforting, and whose company is so dear to you! How is it that you did not watch him every moment for fear of losing sight of him? Yet, since you have let him go, what a mercy that you are seeking him, even though you mournfully groan, “O that I knew where I might find him!” Go on seeking, for it is dangerous to be without thy Lord. Isn’t it amazing that the more gratefulwe are for what we have the more we are usually given. God loves a cheerful giver! And we have many things to be thankful for. Those who have taken a mission trip will tell you how grateful they are for the simple things. Such as clean water, health, and being able to eat food.

God also gives us blessings according to our labor. The more we give out to others God will give to us in return. This thought should never be at the forefront of our minds, but it should be something that we are aware of. God sees every gift that we give.

One of the greatest gifts that God has given us is each day.  Today we have the opportunity to shape ourselves, our world, and our history. And that itself, is a gift of God.  We ourselves are the finest of His gifts. Our gift to God is our gratitude.

Sometimes people who serve God live with an unstated “contract faith.” Because they give time and energy to work for God, they think they deserve special treatment in return.
But not my friend Douglas. He has lived a Job-like existence in many ways, experiencing the failure of a ministry, his wife’s death from cancer, and injuries from a drunk driver to himself and a child. Yet Douglas advises, “Don’t confuse God with life.”

When troubles come and doubts arise, I often turn to Romans 8. “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” asked Paul. “Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” (v.35). In that one sentence, Paul summarized his ministry autobiography. He endured trials for the sake of the gospel; yet somehow he had the faith to believe that these “things”—surely not good in themselves—could be used by God to accomplish good. He had learned to see past the hardships to a loving God who will one day prevail. He wrote, “I am persuaded that [nothing] shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ” (vv.38-39).

Confidence like that can go a long way in helping overcome discouragement about how life hasn’t worked out the way we thought it would.

There are times when the disciple of Christ must experience excruciating pain without any ability to understand why. Job, in a state of spiritual vertigo, argues that an impartial judge observing how God treated him would tilt the balance of justice in favor of Job. For the sake of argument, however, let us suppose that God did explain "why" to Job, narrating the conversation between God and Satan. Job could have responded in one of two ways: First, he could say, "Oh, now I understand. I now consent to the pain inflicted upon me," in which case nothing changes except Job's curiosity is satisfied. Second, he could say, "I resent being so used to make Your point. I thought I was Your friend and Satan Your enemy. I cannot agree to what You are doing!" 

To this latter response God could counter in one of two ways: First, he could say, "I am sorry Job, you are correct. I don't know what I was thinking of. I will stop the pain and make you a promise that never again will I allow anything of a hurtful nature to enter your life without your approval," in which case God would cease being God. He would be nothing more than a genie in a bottle, called out on occasion to do Job's bidding. Second, God could say, "Who do you think you are challenging My authority? You fear the leviathan; why don't you fear the One who created the leviathan? Does not the creator have the right to do what He wants with His creatures?" This, in essence, is the answer God gave Job in chapters 38-41. 

Seemingly senseless pain and trauma engulfs much of life. If you seek to follow Him, you must be content to trust His character rather than your ability to understand. The difference between a knife in the hand of an assassin and a surgeon is intent. Both inflict severe pain. You must decide whether God is an assassin or a surgeon. But remember, your choice does not change God, only your opinion. All the risk of making the wrong choice is on you.

How encouraging is the thought of the Redeemer’s never- ceasing intercession for us. When we pray, he pleads for us; and when we are not praying, he is advocating our cause, and by his supplications shielding us from unseen dangers. Notice the word of comfort addressed to Peter—“Simon, Simon, Satan hath desired to have you that he may sift you as wheat; but”—what? “But go and pray for yourself.” That would be good advice, but it is not so written. Neither does he say, “But I will keep you watchful, and so you shall be preserved.” That were a great blessing. No, it is, “But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not.” We little know what we owe to our Saviour’s prayers. When we reach the hill-tops of heaven, and look back upon all the way whereby the Lord our God hath led us, how we shall praise him who, before the eternal throne, undid the mischief which Satan was doing upon earth. How shall we thank him because he never held his peace, but day and night pointed to the wounds upon his hands, and carried our names upon his breastplate! Even before Satan had begun to tempt, Jesus had forestalled him and entered a plea in heaven. Mercy outruns malice. Mark, he does not say, “Satan hath desired to have you.” He checks Satan even in his very desire, and nips it in the bud. He does not say, “But I have desired to pray for you.” No, but “I have prayed for you: I have done it already; I have gone to court and entered a counterplea even before an accusation is made.” O Jesus, what a comfort it is that thou hast pleaded our cause against our unseen enemies; countermined their mines, and unmasked their ambushes. Here is a matter for joy, gratitude, hope, and confidence.

"Traveling Light" Ruth Graham

The Christian life is a climb. For Christians keeping in shape spiritually and traveling light are important.  To keep in shape spiritually, we need nourishment and exercise.

The definition of traveling light may vary from person to person, but most of us need to trim off some excess weight. We have too many social involvements, an overabundance of good but necessary meetings. We are on more boards than one person can adequately or usefully serve. Remember the caution: "Beware the bareness of a busy life."

It is up to us to keep in shape and travel light.

Ask God what you need to remove so you can travel lighter!!!!

Practical Practices

With each new year comes new challenges and as medical students we are always challenged to spend time with God. However, with our hectic schedules and tired minds and bodies make spending time with God a lost cause. Even if we discipline ourselves to have a scheduled time with God sometimes that time gets lost in the shuffle. Here are some practical tips for getting closer to God.

Become a doer of the word- Taking one verse and applying it to your life each day is  better than knowing or reading the whole Bible and not living any of it.

Pray without ceasing- sometimes morning prayer gets cut short due to fatigue. In these moments you can keep close to God by praying without ceasing. Use your time driving to school or to the hospital as a time of prayer. Use your time driving home as a time of meditation

Guard your ears- what you listen to can affect your day. Choose to fill your mind with uplifting worship

Forsake not the assembly of the brethren- schedule in time to go to church or Bible study to build yourself up and  build others up.

Make the most of every opportunity- When there is a break given to you sneak away with God. Take a verse to meditate on and look at it every chance you get. When you have a free moment, or a moment to take a break, instead of pushing the Bible aside for some tv. Spend time in God’s word.

Above all else: Ask God to help you in creative ways to spend time with Him.

Prayer for today: Dear Lord, please help me to put some new habits into practice this year. Help me to learn how to become close to you in whatever state I am. Amen.

Second Chances

Each person deserves a second chance including ourselves. We are often our worst prosecutor. We make a mistake, and ask God for forgiveness, but we never forgive ourselves. When the time comes to continue anew,  we return to the same mistake, and many times fall into self-condemnation. We say things such as: “I’ll never get this right.” “This challenge is too great.” “ I may as well just settle where I am.”

These statements deny how powerful God is.  The Bible says that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). The word cleanse is an active word, and it indicates a process.  God has taken our sins and iniquities and cast them into the depths of the sea (Micah 7:19), and there is no condemnation in Him(Romans 8:1). He has started us on a path where He is cleansing us, and He knows we are not perfect. He is there and can bring us out of any struggle and any situation where we have lost hope. God’s mercy and forgiveness is such a wonderful gift.

Today we must take confidence that through the strength of God we can move forward. We can forgive ourselves. There is nothing impossible with God, and He is willing to give us a second chance; Will you give yourself a second chance today?

Ask God to help you in situations where you are struggling, and ask God to help you forgive yourself.

"Setting Goals for The Year"  by Cheryl Biehl

If you have flown on a commercial flight lately, you will notice the speech that the flight attendants recite just before take off. During their instruction they recite " In the event of a loss of cabin pressure, an oxygen mask will automatically be lowered. if you are sitting beside a child, please secure your mask first and then apply one to the child.

Why do they advise you to do that? They realize that unless you as the adult are getting the oxygen you need , you'll be of no help to the child, and you will both perish. Jesus, filled with absolute love and compassion, went to the mountains to spend time with His Father in Prayer, to renew His weary body and soul. When the crowd pressed around on Him, He suggested that they all get away from the crowd.

As doctors and medical students we need to make sure we are getting enough "oxygen" in out life to be of maximum benefit to those around us. It is not selfish to set goals allowing you to refill your cup. Even though rest may appear to interfere with studies or work it is imperative to recharge. An empty tea kettle will crack or melt under the heat, so you will also break as the heat of life is turned on - if your emotional or spiritual cup is dry.


Daily Prayer
Ask the Lord to help you to find a time to rest and peace for each day. Ask Him to help you cast your cares rest in Him.

New Year’s Resolutions

Each New Year’s Day at 12 midnight, millions of New Years Resolutions fall in the form of confetti in Times Square in New York. This year millions of resolutions were thrown from 10 story windows and looked pretty. I have noticed that each New Year usually comes with many resolutions from the ones I love.  In the past I have heard resolutions such as: I am going to lose weight, I am going to be a better role model, I am going to work harder this year, and the list goes on and on. For many years, along with other resolutions I have made, I always include resolutions to get closer to God. These have been to read my Bible more, pray more, and become more involved in church.  These resolutions, however, often look pretty, just like the confetti that fell in Times Square.

This year I heard a very interesting comment from a cynic.  “ Why make New Years resolutions. If you want to do something then get your stuff together and do it. Don’t do it because its and arbitrary date. “ This statement has challenged me. I need to stop wanting and get myself together and just do it! In this New Year this should become a challenge to us.  We should stop planning, hoping, and wishing and Just do it! We must not look back at the previous year and what we have done in the past. We need to look to the future. If God has changed you this past year don’t go back to the old ways. If you are expecting God to do something get ready and when God challenges you to do something change just do it. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might( Ecc 9:10 a)!
